Understanding Anti-Social Behaviour
Anti-social behaviour covers a broad range of unacceptable actions by someone that may leave you feeling distressed or may impact on the use of public amenities. There may be a variety of reasons why this occurs and often is an indicator that people need support.
SLEEPING IN PUBLIC
Includes dangers to the person/s who is asleep and others who may inadvertently come into contact with this person/s. For example a person asleep on a bike path could be a danger to themselves and a cyclist using the path.
If there is any doubt whether the person is not just asleep then immediately call 000.
NOISE AND NUISANCE IN PUBLIC
Residents have the right to live free from public disturbances including excessive noise and nuisance behaviour. As an example a group of people playing loud music and swearing late at night in a public park may cause distress for residents trying to sleep.
If there is fighting or violence of any kind then call 000 for emergency assistance.
PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS / INTOXICATION IN PUBLIC
People may be a risk to themselves and their actions could adversely affect general community. For example if a person is believed to be drunk (strong smell of alcohol and mumbling to themselves) and sitting on a footpath close to a main road this could result in issues if the person is to wander onto the road.
If the person is walking side to side and may pose an immediate danger to themselves or traffic then ring 000 for emergency assistance.
HOMELESSNESS OR WELFARE CHECK IN PUBLIC
Homeless people and others living on the streets are at risk given their vulnerable lifestyle and the external environment, some of which may be out of their control. As an example an old lady with a bandage wrapped around her head sitting alone in a park at night may need outreach support. Patrol officers work with a range of social support and health services and can assist people in need.
MANDATORY REPORTING
In the Northern Territory, you must make a report if you reasonably believe a child has been harmed or exploited, or that a child is likely to be harmed or exploited. In an emergency call 000 for assistance or if not an emergency call Police on 13 14 44.
If you are worried about neglect or harm to a child but are not sure if it’s something you should report, you should talk about your concerns with professional staff at the Child Abuse Hotline on 1800 700 250.
ACTIVITY THAT NEEDS REPORTING TO THE POLICE
IT MAY BE CLASSED AS CRIMINAL ACTIVITY:
These matters relate to criminal activity and must be reported to the Police:
Physical fighting/assaults
Threats of violence
Property break-ins and stealing
Drug use and trafficking
For police, fire or ambulance in an emergency call 000 or to report criminal activity that is not life threatening call police on 13 14 44.
People can also report non urgent criminal behaviour anonymously through Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or online nt.crimestoppers.com.au
ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR

People sitting in groups not blocking a pathway
Groups of teenagers with low music during the day
